Scouts Inc.’s Todd McShay has released his latest mock draft on ESPN.com. While the player he projects to the Chiefs isn’t a surprise, who they pass to take him most certainly is.
5 – Kansas City Chiefs – Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
Berry could make a huge impact in the Chiefs’ secondary as well, but Kansas City has too much work still to do at core positions to spend No. 5 money on a safety. The offensive line needs to be solidified, and that could happen by bringing in Okung, who has a quick first step, good power and a mean streak.
I’ve never had an issue with the Chiefs going with an offensive tackle at the top of the draft, but I would if Eric Berry is still on the board. The offensive line showed at the end of the season they were improving (thank you, Jamaal Charles) something the defense never did.
What might be more interesting in McShay’s scenario is that eight of the first ten picks are linemen, pushing Berry to 7, Sam Bradford to 9, Joe Haden to 13 and Jimmy Clausen out of the first round completely.
To me, Berry is the guy if he’s on the board and if he’s gone with Bradford still available it should make it much easier for Scott Pioli to trade down to get someone like Haden, Dez Bryant or Rolando McClain.
