We’ve seen the same few names connected with the Kansas City Chiefs and the top pick since the season ended. But for the first time (at least that I can remember), there’s a brand new name sitting atop the latest SB Nation Mock Draft.
He may be new to the top spot of mock drafts, he’s very familiar to most Chiefs fans.
1. Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
For the first time in months, I have a new pick for the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 1. West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith has been the pick for a while, but it appears the Chiefs could be closing in on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith. That opens the door for them to address other needs. It’s tough to tell whether the Chiefs will bring back Brandon Albert, so the Chiefs address the defensive line with this pick. Sheldon Richardson’s measurements were a bit disappointing, but he’s a versatile, impact player with a big motor.
This pick is made assuming the deal for Alex Smith gets done,Albert getting a new deal to stay in town and Utah’s Star Lotulelei plummeting down the board due to a heart condition. So we’re dealing with a lot of dominoes that may or may not fall to even get to the possibility of the former Tiger landing in the top spot.
Even if everything falls the right way, I still find it hard to see Richardson come off the board first. Maybe if he would have destroyed the combine, it would be easy to put him in front of Lotulelei and Florida’s Sharrif Floyd among defensive linemen. But he didn’t and hasn’t changed my mind that he’s a top 10 pick, but not approaching No. 1.
One person that disagrees with me? Richardson.
“I see myself as the top pick, not a top-10 pick,” Richardson said this weekend at the NFL Combine. “I didn’t come into this draft to be second to anyone. If they see what they like …they’re going to get a (heck) of a ballplayer.”
