If you are looking for a Chiefs connection to local high school basketball, look no further than the 8th annual KA-MO Hoops Shootout.
Sixty-five teams from five states, including 30 varsity programs, will take part in a 164-game, three-day basketball tournament at four sites — SM East, Blue Valley West, SM South and Rockhurst.
Among the standouts expected to take part are St. James Academy’s Clint McCullough, Rockhurst’s Dan Tapko, Olathe East’s Tyler Kalinoski, Olathe South’s DJ Cole, Olathe Northwest’s Shavon Shields, who is the son of former Chiefs great Will Shields, Johnston (Iowa) point guard Ryan Larsen and Springfield Kickapoo forward Christian Kirk.
If Shavon ends up being 1/10th as good at basketball as his father was at football, he should be able to play the game as long as he wants.
You can check out Shields’ team today between 3-8 pm and tomorrow from 9am-5pm.
