After Dwayne Bowe, the Kansas City Chiefs cupboard is bare when it comes to wide receivers. Many believe that Scott Pioli will address the position in the draft, but Matt Conner of SB Nation Kansas City sees the answer in free agency: Sidney Rice.
For the Chiefs, the acquisition of Rice would be a dream come true. The holes of the Chiefs are fewer than recent seasons, but they are glaring ones given the much tougher schedule facing them in 2011. Matt Cassel simply has to have another impressive target at receiver. The front seven must get a young impact player at defensive tackle. Another pass rusher across from Tamba Hali would truly make the Chiefs defense outstanding.
Other possibilities emerge, ranging from back-up quarterback to offensive line, but it’s these three positions that the Chiefs must address. For the Chiefs to sign a vertical threat like Rice while still holding their draft assets would be the ideal situation and provide the Chiefs with the offensive playmaker they need to go to the next level.
Whenever we have free agency in the NFL, there are few players that would fit better than Rice. The next question, of course, is if Clark Hunt will be willing to open up the checkbook for a big money free agent, something he has been reluctant to do in recent history.
The dream acquisition is still Larry Fitzgerald from the Arizona Cardinals to reunite him with Todd Haley. Unlike Rice, however, the Chiefs would have to give up significant draft picks in order to pry him away from the desert and then hand out a bigger contract than the one Rice would warrant.
So as much as I’ll keep hope alive for Fitz in Kansas City, another solid option other than from the draft would be Rice.
