After an offseason so far full of Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali being overlooked by the national media, it should be no surprise that it’s happening again. This time it’s PFT by leaving Hali off their list of finalists for The Derrick Thomas Award.
The finalists are Packers linebacker Clay Matthews, Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs, Steelers linebacker James Harrison, Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware, Dolphins linebacker Cameron Wake, and Vikings linebacker E.J. Henderson.
Something like this isn’t anywhere near as important as being overlooked in Pro Bowl, All-Pro or Defensive Player of the Year voting, but it’s equally surprising. Of all the players that PFT nominated, they each had more help along the front seven than Hali.
If the performance that he put in this season didn’t impress, I don’t know that Hali will ever be considered among the best, which is where he belongs. The plan next season will be to have more help for the Chiefs in the pass rush department, which will likely create more sacks for the defense. But with Hali still drawing double teams, that means others will pick up those increased sack numbers meaning we shouldn’t expect Hali to get the proper recognition any time soon.
