Tiki Barber announced on Tuesday that he will attempt a comeback after retiring in 2006. Barber told FOX Sports that seeing his brother still playing the game got him interested in returning to the NFL.
“I started working out again recently. It kind of shocked myself. I still had a lot of the strength I had before. I’m really looking forward to making a return.”
“We filed papers for Tiki to come out of retirement” Barber’s agent, Mark Lepselter, told FOXSports.com. “We filed papers with the commmissioner’s office and the Giants. And there are interested parties.”
Who might be interested? SI.com’s Peter King has an idea.
Tiki’s cell rings. Voice on other end says, “Mr. Barber? This is the Oakland Raiders. Please hold for Mr. Davis.”
The Giants still own Barber’s rights, so they would have to make a decision before any team can make a move on the former All-Pro running back.
Obviously the big question right now is why would he attempt a comeback now, so far removed from his playing days? For the same reason most decisions are made: money. After failing to keep a job with NBC Universal, Barber has been plagued by marital problems.
To put in simply: divorce ain’t cheap.
Now Barber will try to go back for one last pay check, after walking away from $9.3 million. Is there any question that Davis will be looking to be the one writing that check?
