Tony Gonzalez Shoots Down Trade Talk

It didn’t take long for Atlanta tight end Tony Gonzalez to make it clear he has no interest in a trade from the Falcons. With his team struggling and other fans salivating at the chance of adding the future Hall of Famer, Gonzalez told Jay Glazer of FOX Sports he wanted to stay put.

I’ve seen a lot of tweets w rumors that Falcons should trade Tony Gonzalez, just got off the phone w him he absolutely does NOT want that. Wants to finish up in ATL

Gonzalez sure did get out ahead of this quickly, but I wonder: what else is he supposed to say?

The Falcons are in the middle of a terrible start and it’s not going to do any good to start stomping around about a possible trade. Say what you want about Gonzalez moving on from the Chiefs when they were going south, but he’s never been one to make a big stink.

It’s also important to remember that, even with superstar WR Julio Jones possibly out for the season, Atlanta is still in the playoff hunt. At 1-4 it will be difficult, but it’s certainly not unheard of considering the talent they still have and will have coming back when RB Steven Jackson gets healthy.

I didn’t think the Falcons would be interested in moving Gonzalez and I still don’t but the tight end saying he wants to stay shouldn’t sway anyone’s opinion. There’s still three weeks before the trade deadline and a lot can happen between now and then.
