The Kansas City Chiefs returned to the practice field today in helmets and shoulder pads, amid the reports that offensive coordinator Chan Gailey was fired.  Filing reports today from Kansas City are Josh Looney @ KCChiefs.com and Bob Gretz @ BobGretz.com & CBSSports.com.

Devard Darling, Brandon Flowers, Bernard Pollard, Zach Thomas, Amani Toomer, Jake O’Connel and Matt Cassel were all held out of practice.

With the departure of offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, Todd Haley and offensive quality control coach Nick Sirianni handled the Chiefs QBs.  Haley also called plays off cards to the quarterbacks throughout practice.

After a rough game against Seattle, Ryan Succop was 4-for-4 on his FG attempts.  His longest was from 49 yards.

Tyler Thigpen worked with the first team offense.

For the first time during training camp, rookie CB Donald Washington was working with the first team defens in place of Flowers, while Maurice Leggett continued to work the nickel.  Wahsington had a nice INT during the first team period.

The Chiefs new “unofficial” depth chart held true with Jon McGraw running with the first team defense in place of Jarrad Page.  Also, Demorrio Williams played with the first team, with Derrick Johnson getting his reps with the reserves.

Damion McIntosh was back with the first team offense at right tackle.

Man, I really hope Haley doesn’t over exert himself by handling all of the play calling/offensive coordinator duties.  Yes, I realize other coaches have made it work, but how many of those guys were in their first year ever as a head coach?  It’s a very dangerous position Haley is putting himself in.

It sure stinks looking at that long list of injuries.  A week ago we were all talking about how the Chiefs had 78 of 80 players practicing and now the injury list continues to grow.  Ugh.

I’m really surprised to see Williams and McGraw working with the first team.  Most had pegged Williams as a cut and Page has been the most consistent player on the defensive side of the ball.  Very odd.

Also interesting to see Washington jump right up to the first team.  Maybe Haley and Clancy Pendergast are just trying to get a look at him with better talent around him?
