Training Camp Q&A: Todd Haley 8/18

After the Chiefs only practice of the day, Todd Haley met with the media.  Here are the highlights:

On Barry Richardson:

“Barry has a chance.  He’s a guy who used the off-season program to his benefit.  Lost more weight than anybody else in the entire off-season program, got himself in condition, got himself much stronger which he is continuing to work on.  He should continue to get stronger as we go forward.  He’s made progress daily, not without some ups and downs.  It’s not picture perfect, by any means – a work in progress – but I think he’s created some competition at the right tackle position.”

On Dwayne Bowe:

“I thought today was another good practice.  He showed up some.  He’s making progress.”

On the quarterback position:

“I think in general across the board for us to have a chance we’re going to have to play pretty good football.  I don’t know that anyone can play perfect but we’re going to have to play error-free; we’re not going be able to beat ourselves whether it’s poor throws, penalties, turnovers, whatever.  I’m always concerned with the quarterback.  I thought today we threw the ball around a little bit.  We had some nice runs, especially in that last drill coming out.  Guys were coming off the ball and making things happen.  But I thought in the passing games there were some positives.  I’m looking forward to looking at tape to see how it looks.”

On Brett Favre coming back:

“One of the great players of all time.  We went up there to the Meadowlands last year and he had probably one of his better games in a long time against us.  So, I don’t have fond memories of Brett Favre.”

How do you balance the financial commitment a team has made to one player with finding the best guy to play?

“I’ve been taught, and it’s what I love about this situation: the best guys are going to play.  I’ve never been taught to worry about money or how much money somebody is making.  I’ve been fortunate enough to be around head coaches and strong personalities that way.  Again, that was one of the most attractive things about this situation because we’re going to play with the guys that give us the best chance to win.  Period.  No other things are going to factor into that.”
