It appears the rumors were true. The University of Florida has hired Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis to serve in the same capacity for new coach Will Muschamp, the AP is reporting. The move is expected to be announced Monday.
Weis, hired at Notre Dame five years ago when Urban Meyer turned the Irish down to come to Gainesville, is currently the offensive coordinator for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs are headed to the playoffs, and Weis will remain with them throughout the postseason. Weis won’t go on the road recruiting at least for a week, but he will be (able) to call recruits.
This was surprising yesterday, but once everything started to come to light it all seems to make more sense. Weis will get to be around his son all year long — a rarity for coaches at any level — and is likely not to take a pay cut with Florida prepared to have plenty of money to spend.
No matter the reasons why he is leaving the Chiefs, Weis will now be a distraction for a team that will need everything to go right if they hope to make a run deep in the playoffs. Todd Haley, who was just saying he knew nothing about Weis’ potential departure, can deny it all he wants, but this is going to be a problem for this team.
