And then there were two. The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Sunday that DE Wallace Gilberry has signed his restricted free agent tender, leaving just CB Brandon Carr and OT Barry Richardson as the only two restricted free agents not to sign their tender.
Per Aaron Wilson, Gilberry’s tender is worth $1.9 million.
The 26-year-old won’t be able to practice — along with the rest of the non-rookie free agents — until Thursday, but getting him signed and on campus is a huge step for the Chiefs defense. In limited duty, Gilberry was easily second on the team in sacks with seven, only being beat out by Tamba Hali’s 14.5.
Other than Gilberry and Hali, the rest of the Kansas City defense only took the quarterback down 16.5 times.
If Todd Haley and Romeo Crennel give Gilberry more playing time, he’ll need to show them he is more than a one trick pony. Even if he repeats his 2010 season, someone is going to write a big check for Gilberry next offseason, but he’ll need to expand his game if he wants it to come from Clark Hunt.
